Essential oils for the home work best in an ultrasonic diffuser, a humidifier or an essence burner: add 3–5 drops to the water, choose a scent to suit the room and your mood, and air the room out from time to time. This guide brings together everything you need to know: how the oils work, which scent to pick for which room, how many drops to use and what to watch out for.
What are essential oils for the home and how do they work?
The Essentia Nature essential oils in our range are water-soluble room fragrance oils in 15 ml bottles. Because they dissolve in water, they are made specifically for devices that spread scent through the air: ultrasonic diffusers, humidifiers and essence burners. A diffuser turns water and a few drops of oil into a cool mist that distributes the scent evenly around the room while lightly humidifying the air.
Important: these oils are not intended for use on the skin, in the bath, for massage or for ingestion. Use them only to fragrance a room.

How to use essential oils in a diffuser: 5 steps
- Place the diffuser on a flat, stable surface, at least 50 cm off the floor and away from electronics and fabrics.
- Fill it with water up to the line on the tank. Cold tap water or filtered water works best.
- Add the oil: start with 3–5 drops per roughly 100 ml of water. If the scent is too faint, add 1–2 more drops next time.
- Switch the diffuser on for 30–60 minutes at a time, then take a break. That way the scent stays pleasant and your nose doesn’t “tune it out”.
- Clean the tank every few uses or whenever you change scents, so the fragrances don’t mix.
With the ultrasonic diffuser with Himalayan salt, you drop the oil directly onto the salt crystals. The mist passes through the crystals, picks up the scent and carries it around the room. The large 400 ml tank runs for up to 24 hours. You’ll find every model in our ultrasonic diffusers collection.
Which scent should you choose for which room?
The simplest rule: fresh, green notes for rooms where you work and wake up, warm, powdery notes for rooms where you relax.
| Essential oil | Scent character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lemongrass | fresh, citrusy (lemongrass, lemon, neroli, mint) | kitchen, mornings, home office corner |
| Eucalyptus | clean, fresh, “deep breath” | bathroom, workspace |
| Green Tea | green, calm | office, yoga, reading |
| Pure Musk | soft, powdery, like fresh laundry | bedroom, walk-in wardrobe |
| Jasmine | floral, soft, romantic | bedroom, unwinding in the evening |
| Patchouli | earthy, balsamic, powdery | living room, evenings |
| Amber Allure | warm amber, tonka, vanilla, musk | living room, cold evenings |
| Vanilla & Cashmere | warm, sweet, powdery | living room, autumn and winter |
| Orange & Cinnamon | spicy-citrusy, festive | dining room, December |
| Argan | warm, creamy (almond, coconut, vanilla) | bathroom, bedroom |
In autumn and winter, warm scents are the most popular: Orange & Cinnamon, Vanilla & Cashmere and Amber Allure. In spring and summer, most people go back to fresh scents such as Lemongrass and Green Tea. Browse the full range in our essential oils collection.
Can you combine essential oils?
Yes, but stick to two scents at a time at a ratio of roughly 2:1 (for example, 3 drops of Lemongrass and 1–2 drops of Green Tea). Scents from the same family pair well (fresh with fresh, warm with warm), as does a fresh scent with a soft powdery note, such as Eucalyptus with Pure Musk. Mixing more than three oils usually results in a heavy, muddy scent.
Diffuser, reeds or spray: which is right for you?
- Ultrasonic diffuser with essential oil: you switch the scent on when you want it and can change it easily. The best choice if you like to switch scents depending on the time of day.
- Glass reed diffuser: works on its own, without electricity, and releases fragrance continuously. Ideal for a hallway or bathroom, for example GLAMOUR Vanilla & Pistachio or GLAMOUR White Musk. See more in our diffusers collection.
- Room and fabric spray: for a quick refresh before guests arrive, or for curtains and cushions. Find the selection in our fragrance sprays collection.
- Scented cards: for wardrobes, drawers and the car, where a diffuser isn’t practical: scented cards.
If you’d like the same fresh feeling to stay on your clothes and bedding too, pair it with a laundry perfume.
Safety and storage
- Use the oil only in a diffuser, humidifier or essence burner. Do not apply it to the skin and do not ingest it.
- Keep bottles closed, out of the reach of children, in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
- Air the room regularly and don’t leave the diffuser running all day.
- Pets, especially cats, are more sensitive to scents. Place the diffuser in a room the animal can leave, and watch for signs of discomfort.
- If you have asthma, are pregnant or have a baby in the room, start with fewer drops and shorter run times.
In short
- Essential oils for the home are water-soluble and intended only for diffusers, humidifiers and essence burners.
- Start with 3–5 drops per 100 ml of water and run the diffuser in intervals of 30–60 minutes.
- Fresh scents (Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Green Tea) for the kitchen and work, warm ones (Vanilla & Cashmere, Amber Allure, Orange & Cinnamon) for the living room and colder months.
- Combine no more than two scents at a time.
Frequently asked questions
How many drops of essential oil should I put in a diffuser?
Start with 3–5 drops per roughly 100 ml of water. In a larger room or with a bigger tank, you can add a few more drops. It’s better to start with less and build up gradually.
Can I use these essential oils in the bath or for massage?
No. The Essentia Nature essential oils in our range are water-soluble room fragrance oils, intended only for diffusers, humidifiers and essence burners.
How long should the diffuser stay on?
We recommend 30–60 minutes at a time, followed by a break. Running it non-stop doesn’t make the scent any more pleasant, because your nose quickly gets used to it.
How long does a 15 ml bottle last?
That depends on how often you use it. At 3–5 drops per use, one bottle is enough for dozens of diffuser refills.
Are essential oils safe for pets?
Be careful around animals, especially cats. Use fewer drops, ventilate well and make sure the animal can leave the room where the diffuser is running.
What is the difference between an essential oil and a laundry perfume?
An essential oil fragrances a room via a diffuser, while a laundry perfume goes into the washing machine so the scent stays on your clothes and bedding. The two complement each other perfectly.
